This is one day theory course is your stepping stone to becoming a Level 1 STMS. Our traffic control courses provide in-depth training on Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) guidelines, skills and requirements. It is a great starting point for individuals, project managers, and site managers who interact with traffic management.

Soon to be known as a Level 1 Non-practising Traffic Controller qualification.

NZQA Unit Standards

Theory

The tc course is predominantly classroom-based and attendees will be taught to navigate CoPTTM to find answers to tests. This is an extremely useful tool as it empowers employees to find solutions to problems in the field and facilitates ongoing learning.

PRACTICAL

An optional additional practical exercise is available. Attendees will practice what they learnt in the theory stage.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
  • The qualified person on Level LV and Level 1 roads who: 
    • Assists with the deployment of the operation.
    • Maintains the site within existing TTM phase while the STMS is away from the worksite.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Part 1: The NZTA Workshop 

This is your CoPTTM theory load up on what it means to be a Traffic Controller. It includes your roles and responsibilities around TTM worksites. We will introduce you to the standard paperwork required on the site and go through every aspect involved with maintaining a site that has been delegated to you.

Part 2: The Practical Sign-Offs 

Knowledge and skills to maintain existing static LV and Level 1 worksite under instruction from the STMS while the STMS is away from the worksite. 

An introduction to some of the roles and responsibilities of an STMS.  Early exposure to TMPs, paperwork, risk assessments. A big focus on communication across; staff, clients and the public. Practical focus on the maintenance of worksites, identifying faults and taking the appropriate corrective action required.

This includes:

  • Explaining the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in TTM.
  • Understanding delegated authority.
  • Personal health and safety.
  • Site inductions.
  • Paperwork – Hazard and Risk ID, Onsite Records
  • Site monitoring and correcting defects.

NZQA UNIT STANDARDS

The new unit standards are on thier way, however the current unit standards can achieved.

5627 Operate as a Traffic Controller (TC) for low volume and Level 1 roads. 

20877 Demonstrate knowledge of working safely at sites under temporary traffic management or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. and/or, Assist with temporary traffic management for low volume and Level 1 roads.

20878 Assist with temporary traffic management for low volume and Level 1 roads.
